If you’ve never been to the Sheep & Wool Festival at the Howard County Fairgrounds, I highly recommend it. The event, the sites and the whole phenomenon is, imo, a whole lot more fun than might appear by the festival title. I’m not much of a journalist or descriptive writer, so cut me some slack here.
Basically, the show is part industry, part 4-H, part crafts and just part fun. Published events include —
- The Parade of Breeds
- Sheep to Shawl (a day-long event of shearing, carding, spinning and weaving/knitting)
- Working sheep dogs
- A felting workshop
Plus, there’s lamb dishes, and sheep and goat cheeses for sale. Beautifully knitted items and tons of wool-based crafts and crafting tools are on sale. Traditional music performances are scattered throughout the schedule, too. Check it out.
And, remember, only certified working dogs are allowed, so leave your pets at home.
