Electronic Bumper Stickers

24 Sep

Do you find yourself supporting the “Choose Civility in Howard County” initiative, but you’re not a fan of bumper stickers? Even when the “sticker” is actually a magnet? Well, there is a modern-day alternative for you: Join the “Choose Civility in Howard County” Facebook group. Here you’ll find links to local blog posts about “choosing civility,” some information about the initiative itself and your HoCo neighbors.

Facebook groups, for the most part, function as electronic bumper stickers … a way to broadcast one’s interests, affiliations and attitudes inside of a social network.

Kirt, The closest I can come to answering your question about the Choose Civility bumper stickers (car magnets, actually) is that they are a component of the “Choose Civility in Howard County” initiative, of which the library system has been a big player. http://www.choosecivility.org. The initiative is connected to a similarly titled book: Choosing Civility: The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct by P.M. Forni.

What it means to each person — whether it’s a political statement, moral challenge, or something altogether different — I can’t answer that. I do blog on the subject here on Hometown Columbia, with blogs, by nature, being personal perspective. (To read more, in the *categories* on the right, select *Choose Civility.*) I also blog about with a friend here: http://americancitygirls.wordpress.com/.
